Student Fitness to Practise hearing
Yesterday, I was sent to Coventry - in London!
One of my clients, a nursing student, asked me to represent them in a student fitness to practise hearing at the London campus of Coventry University.
The student had made an admitted single error of judgement on a final placement, and as a result, they were facing a hearing which would decide whether or not they could complete their course and obtain professional registration as a nurse. The stakes were understandably high.
Prior to the hearing, we prepared the student’s defence diligently to ensure that they were able to put the best possible case before the panel. Part of the preparation is to give the student the confidence to address the panel’s concerns, and my client was able to answer questions with authority and assurance.
The university had never been faced with a student having legal representation - as a result they brought their own lawyers!
Nevertheless, following my submissions, my client succeeded in retaining their place on the course, and can now go on to complete it and graduate.
Even for students, the right advice and assistance is crucial at such hearings. My client’s future plans were innovative and interesting, and I look forward to seeing their progress over the next few years!
